The Goal Problem

What do your goals look like on paper?  Have you analyzed them thoroughly and mapped out a process for reaching them?

No, right?

That’s ok, you would be a rare specimen indeed if you had the foresight to do this.  Hell, I don’t think I’ve ever done this and I think about my goals on a daily basis.

It’s just one of those things most of us don’t consider.

You hear so much about setting goals and how important they are, but who shows us how to actually reach them? Or how to build a system for getting there?

Goals are the culmination of a million tiny action steps. That’s all success is: repetition and consistency.

Map out your goals into the smallest forms of action that you can think of. You can tweak this as you go and as you learn more. Once you have mapped out this series of action steps, it’s time to get working.

The more you work on these action steps, the better you get at working on them. Then, when you develop the habits necessary to complete these steps without thought, you have the formula.

It’s about building the habits that will have you completing those action steps Over and Over and Over and Over.

The things we do repeatedly are based in our habits.  Your good and bad habits are moving you forward or backwards. Like Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Try this:

  1. Pick a goal
  2. Break it down into a yearly, monthly, and daily timeline representing the mini habits that make up your goal
  3. Get working on that schedule until your habits stick
  4. Enjoy the success

Once you have a visual idea of what you need to do you can focus on the doing.  This is the secret sauce to goal reaching.
