I love condiments and sauces. I think every bite of a meal should be drenched in liquid flavor awesomeness. Unfortunately, store-bought condiments are not good for you…
When I finally gave up store-bought ketchup I lost 5 pounds of fat …really. This was 5 years ago and since then I’ve been on the hunt for Paleo-friendly condiments to go with my meals.
I’m pretty good at making sauces when cooking, especially pan sauces, but it takes time and work to make sauces from scratch and sometimes I’m simply not in the mood to cook.
Paleo Condiments To The Rescue!
You can keep homemade condiments in the fridge ready to go at a moments notice. Don’t feel like cooking today? How bout some leftover chicken and a Paleo BBQ sauce? Or some honey mustard? Or a Paleo ketchup?
- 1.5 pounds red jalpeno peppers – stemmed, seeded, chopped
- 8 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed
- 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
- 3 tbsp tomato paste
- 3 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp Paleo-friendly fish sauce - Red Boat Fish Sauce
- 1.5 tsp kosher salt
Step 1: Prep
Step 2: Toss everything in a blender and blend until smooth
Step 3: Cook over med-heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally
There are so many Paleo condiment recipes out there: pick a few and try them. Experiment with different ingredients and amounts and remember that recipes are just guidelines. Real culinary greatness comes from stumbling around and tweaking.
We all have different palates and some sauces, like the Sriracha above, may not appeal to everyone. Personally, I like sauces that balance sweet and savory and that is why I love BBQ and Brerre Blancs (plus hot sauces). The key is to find what you like.
